This website is me… being what I can be. Being what I must be. Whether that results in becoming ultimately at peace with myself, or in gnashing of teeth and rending of garments, we shall see.
— Carol Wightman
I was born into a military family many long years ago. Let’s just say I’m ageless.
Because military people move all the time I got very used to being uprooted from my latest school and torn away from my latest (newly made) friends and forced to start orienting and socializing all over again in a new place every year or two, with only my parents, two sisters, two brothers, and a huge extended family for moral support. Whatever. We managed.
One thing I’ll say about that upbringing though, is that it does lend itself to a short attention span. Even after I was grown and left home, I found myself always looking for the next thing. Bored? Try moving and reinventing your life with an all-new school, job, housing, and friends. That’ll do it.
After living in Montreal QC, Portage La Prairie MB, Claresholm AB, Greenwood NS, Summerside PEI, Ottawa ON, Edwards Air Force Base CA, Ottawa (again), Toronto ON, Ottawa (one more time), Baden Soellingen Germany, Ottawa (OK let’s call it my home town), Langley BC, Vancouver BC, and Nelson BC, not to mention travelling to and through a whole whack of other places along the way, I eventually put down roots in Victoria BC. Here I shall remain. Unless I move.
I have satisfied my need for change by being willing to try almost anything once, and by finding a career in marketing, where the projects I’ve worked on range from flogging beer to raising awareness of organ donation. My personal creative output adds to the all-important novelty factor. Change is good.
With people, on the other hand, I’m in it for life. Over the years I have accumulated a son I cherish, a truly wonderful husband, a friendly ex, dedicated workout buddies, and many dear friends and colleagues. The two parents, two sisters, two brothers, and extended family members are still a treasured part of my life. And let’s not forget our little clown prince, the three-legged cat.
Everything else you need to know about me is in here somewhere…
There’s nothing more fulfilling than telling a tale that provokes thought, laughter, or a lump in the throat. Here’s some of my storytelling, in poetry and prose.
